  • A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHRIST ANGLICAN CHURCH, ERIN – IJESA
In 1904 Elder Jacob Ariyo came home from Iperindo as a Christian and started to assemble both men and women of the then Erin-Odo and Erin-Oke. Later they moved to Mr. Jegede’s house at Idi-Ayan street, Erin-Odo now known as Erin-Ijesa, it was here the Bamboo Church house was built. The Church Missionary Society Official came in.
The first set of Christian brothers and sisters then were: Elder John Fakankun, Simeon Akinleye, Joseph Ola Jegede, Faseesin, Simeon Fasoto, Madam Hannah Fakankun, Morojuola and Madam Adedayo Cane Apotun from Ejirin-Ijebu waterside first Iya egbe Maria Fatoki and Elizabeth Akinfenwa etc.
Soon after the settlement at Idi-Ayan, Elder Jacob Ariyo appealed to the Kabiyesi, Oba Ayeni. The Akinla of Erin-Odo for a piece of land for the church building. Oba Ayeni granted the request and gave both land and moral support for the building of a church.
The first church was then built at Odo-Iro Street in 1916. When the congregation grew, the move to build another church was made and the same Kabiyesi, Oba Ayeni gave the church a large portion of land of the present site the second church was built in 1929.
When the church was growing by lips and bound, the C. M. S organizations were sending missionaries to oversee the progress being made. Bishop John Falope sent his students on practice from St. Andrew’s College Oyo to Erin-Odo. Various renovations were made from time-to-time and the Assembly was given a new look.
In 1962, Rev. A.A. Morakinyo was the Chairman of the Parish Council at Erin-Odo. Rev. E.O. Bolaji became the Vicar of the church between 1972 and 1980. Later the move for a modern church was made and the P.C.C proposed a building Committee which compromised people at home and abroad.
On 11th April1981, the foundation was laid by Rt. Rev. G.I.O. Olajide, the Bishop of Ilesa Diocese then. After roofing, the church was put into use without flooring. Later cements were donated for the flooring. Equipments started coming in from groups and individuals as donations. Mama Christianah Akinleye was installed the Iya Egbe-Ijo in 1986 and the son, Mr. J. O. Akinleye donated equipments to the church on the occasion. Others who donated were Chief (Mrs.) C. O. Oyerinde, Senator (Chief) Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa, Prof. C. O. Orangun, Mr. J.H.O. Famakin, Chief J. O. Akinfenwa and the children of late Pa Joseph Fasola – Mr. & Mrs. Gbenga Obisesan. Chief F.O. Fagbohungbe, S.A.N, FCIArb, donated the solid wall-fences along the main road and behind the Vicarage. He was instrumental in the building of the new office complex.
It was recorded that Rev. J.O. Ogunbanwo pasted the window and door glasses while Rev. Ajakaiye faced the ceiling which marched the beauty of the church. The building was dedicated by the Rt. Rev. E.A. Ademowo on 26th October, 1996 to the Glory of God. There was need for a vicarage and one was built. The first vicarage was built of mud and corrugated iron roofing by a communal labor. The first Agent to use the vicarage was Mr. S. Morakinyo in 1917. Later in 1963, the youths resolved that the old vicarage be demolished and a new one be built which was turned down.
In the year 2000, Rev. Canon M. O. Odukoya proposed the building of a new vicarage within the church yard. A modern vicarage structure was sought and approval was given after which a donor was found in person of Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa.
On 27th February, 2003 The Rt. Rev. Dr. S.O. Sowale, Lord Bishop of Ilesa Diocese dedicated the building for use and Ven. D. A. O. Adesanmi moved in.
The church grew from a parish to a full flesh church and later an Archdeaconry Seat in 2002.
In 2011, the Youths built a modern toilet for the Church and “Marian Children Chapel” was built for the church by Senator J.M. Akinfenwa in memory of his mother. An Elegant fourteen – Seater President A-C Bus was donated by Chief F.O.
